How to Become a Nurse Assistant

Study nursing assistant foundations, personal care and advanced support, with supervised lab and clinical preparation based on the supplied CNA syllabi. State authorization, approved practical hours and competency examination requirements are separate.

  1. 1

    Check the basics

Most programs ask for a high school diploma or GED and that you are at least 18. Some employers also require a background check and immunizations.

  2. 2

Complete a Nurse Assistant training program

SITTI's program runs Academy-approved schedule (Online theory + supervised lab/clinical). You'll cover: CNA 101 · Role, Resident Rights & Professional Ethics, CNA 101 · Medical Terminology & Human Needs, CNA 101 · Communication, Observation & Documentation, CNA 101 · Infection Control, Hand Hygiene & PPE, CNA 101 · Safety, Body Mechanics & Emergency Response and more.

  3. 3

    Practice hands-on skills

Build confidence through skills labs, check-offs signed by an instructor and, where offered, clinical practice with a partner site.

  4. 4

Prepare for and take a national exam

Common credentials include School Certificate of Completion (Issuing academy after required approval), State nurse aide competency examination (State-approved training and testing eligibility required). Use practice tests to find weak spots before exam day. Passing is up to you and isn't guaranteed.

  5. 5

    Check your state's rules

A few states license certain healthcare roles directly. Look up your state before you apply for jobs.

  6. 6

    Keep your credential current

Most certifications need continuing education and renewal every one to two years.
